Know the 7 Most Common Types of Elder Abuse.

Elder abuse can manifest in various forms, and there are commonly recognized types of elder abuse. The seven types of elder abuse are:

1. Physical abuse: This involves the use of physical force that causes bodily harm, pain, injury, or impairment. It can include hitting, pushing, slapping, kicking, restraining, or any other form of physical violence.

2. Emotional or psychological abuse: This type of abuse involves behaviors that inflict mental anguish, emotional pain, or distress on an older adult. This can include verbal threats, insults, humiliation, intimidation, isolation, or controlling behaviors.

3. Financial abuse: Financial exploitation of older adults involves the unauthorized or improper use of an elder’s funds, property, or assets. This can include theft, fraud, scams, coercion, undue influence, or misuse of a power of attorney.

4. Sexual abuse: Sexual abuse of older adults involves any non-consensual sexual contact or activity with an elderly person. This includes sexual assault, harassment, exploitation, or any sexual contact with an older adult who is unable to give consent.

5. Neglect: Neglect occurs when a caregiver fails to provide the necessary care and assistance an older adult needs to maintain their health and well-being. This can include failing to provide food, shelter, medical care, hygiene assistance, or emotional support.

6. Self-neglect: Self-neglect refers to situations where an older adult fails to meet their own basic needs for health, safety, and well-being. This can include neglecting personal hygiene, failing to take prescribed medications, living in unsafe or unsanitary conditions, or refusing necessary medical treatment.

7. Abandonment: Abandonment occurs when a caregiver responsible for an older adult deserts or intentionally leaves the older adult alone, without making arrangements for their care or safety.

It is important to be aware of these different types of elder abuse and to take action if you suspect that an older adult is experiencing any form of mistreatment or abuse. Reporting suspected elder abuse to the appropriate authorities can help protect the older adult and prevent further harm.
